Now's your chance--
You run for the chest and pull it open, thankfully it wasn't locked. Inside, there's a handful of miscellaneous garbage; some presumably stolen books, a piece of cake, some house keys... and a bag! This must be what you were looking for.
You grab the bag and throw it over your shoulder to keep your hands free. You close the chest silently and make a break for it, running back the way you came, either returning to the sewers below or running out the front door.
Once you've put some distance between you and the sheriff's office, you peek inside the bag and find a few journal scraps and... a weemstone! No wonder Cobalt wanted this stuff back...
You debate just keeping the stone for yourself or returning it to Cobalt for your reward. Deciding against stealing stolen goods, you run off to find Cobalt at the market.
Cobalt: Ah, you're back! Did you get my stuff?
You nod, then mentally kick yourself for it.
You hand the staxie the bag and verbally confirm that you got the bag with the journal scraps and weemstone.
Cobalt: Some what?
Cobalt rips the bag out of your hands and feels around inside, then throws the thing on the ground in frustration.
Cobalt: GAH! This isn't what I wanted!
Cobalt: Slurm got a slice of cake from Shimeji's yesterday that was meant for me!
Cobalt: UGH. You've wasted my time. Get out of here.
Cobalt swats in your direction, encouraging you to leave. You stand firm, trying to hide your anger.
You demand payment for your time. You threaten to turn Cobalt in for his illegal weem-meat potions if he doesn't pay his dues.
Cobalt: Payment for what? For Slurm's trash?? Whatever, take it.
Cobalt produces and drops a vial (that miraculously doesn't break) and a handful of coins at his feet before storming off.
