What are Beans?
Beans are benchmarks of your progress in Staves Rest! They are earned for every drawing, piece of literature, craft and animation you do! They are used for unlocking upgrades that you can apply to any of your staxies!

Beans are NOT spent when an upgrade is applied, you only ever earn them, you never lose them!

Every upgrade has a bean count, such as the one above!

How do I earn Beans?
Every type of art earns beans a little differently! Let's first look at the most common form of art seen in the group-- drawings!

DRAWINGS

1 Bean

sketch.png

Sketch/Linework

Anything from messy sketches to clean lineart. If it doesn't have color, it belongs here!

2 Beans

color.png

Colored

Clean linework and must be colored! Can have greyscale coloring or a limited color palette.
It might also possess other elements but not qualify for a polished piece.
(shading but no background, background but no shading, etc)

5 Beans

polished.png

Polished

Polished pieces must be shaded and also have a shaded background/foreground.

Each Character +1 Bean

2.png

Every character/creature in an image counts for 1 bean!
In the above image, there are four characters, so +4 beans!

Creatures qualify as any official Staves Rest creature!

Each Gift Art Character +1 Bean

2.png

Every staxie that does NOT belong to you earns you an additional 1 bean!
In the above image, two of the four characters don't belong to Apollo, so +2 beans!

NPCs also count as "gift art"!

HEADSHOT vs BUST

Characters/creatures only count for beans if they're at least a bust!

  • No floating heads

  • Slightly covered/obscured faces are okay

  • Seeing at least the shoulders is a minimum

  • Crubs and Sileans do NOT count for beans.

Shading

What counts as shading for a polished piece?
Shading should be detailed and specific rather than vague!

LITERATURE

1 Bean

3.png

Every 250 Words
Whether it stands on its own or it accompanies a drawing, every 250 words counts for a bean!

Don't forget to include a word count somewhere in the description!

Count your words here!

CRAFTS

4.png

A craft can be nearly anything!
From woodburning to knitting, from clay to resin, and anything else under the sun that isn't rendered in 2 dimensions either digitally or pigments applied to a surface alone, crafts are a very big undertaking!

As such, each craft will be reviewed individually by mods and assigned a number of beans based on the Effort, Complexity, and Outcome of a piece.

-The Effort refers to the use of your skills as an artist, and the finish put into a piece. The more put together it looks, the more Beans you'll score for effort!
-The Complexity of a piece refers to the elements chosen to make up the piece, and how ambitious they were. A crub made of clay for example would be of a much lower Complexity than say, an art doll of your own character.
-The Outcome of a piece refers to how the final product looks and functions.  A simple craft, even one put together quickly, may really shine if it's well done and presentable.  How accurate or well presented will have the most effect on your Outcome score.

Bonus beans for NPCs and Giftart apply here as well!
Count crafts as sketches, meaning give yourself as many beans as your craft would earn would it be a sketch!

Submit your deviation link to #animations-and-crafts on our Discord to receive your extra beans!

ANIMATION

1.gif

Does your drawing do a little dance? Does it shine, spin, sprint, or sag? If you've added multiple frames to a piece otherwise considered a drawing, you're in the right place!

Bonus beans for NPCs and Giftart apply here as well!

When putting your Bean Count in the description of your submission for an animation, please include how much they'd get if they were a still, single framed image.
(ie. the image above would be a single Colored Fullbody, so 3 beans!)

Animation is a very complex art form, and anyone who's brave enough to give it a shot, be they a brand new artist or a professional, deserves an extra reward. This is where our #animations-and-crafts channel comes in!

It is mandatory to use in Staves Rest!

Step 1: Making your Tracker

Replace BLANK with your deviantART Username
<---

Step 2: Enable Access to your Tracker

bean guide 3.png

1. Click SHARE

2. Under "Get Link", click CHANGE TO ANYONE WITH THE LINK

3. Click COPY LINK.
This link is what you
'll add to the description of every Staves Rest deviation!

Step 3: Filling out your Bean Tracker

bean guide 5 event.png

1. Copy your deviation's URL and add it to your box labeled "DEVIATION LINK."
<---

2. Determine the "Type of Art".
Remember:
Crafts are Sketches.
Animations are whatever they would be as a single still frame
Literature (with no accompanying art) should stay as "[Select Type]".

3. Fill in the "# of Characters" and "# of Gift Staxies".
Remember that only busts and fullbodies count!
Crubs and Sileans do NOT count for beans.

There is a 20 character cap for each image.
This includes staxies, stumps and creatures. The Bean Tracker has a drop-down list of 0-9 for convenience, but you can manually fill out the number of characters up to 20.
If your image has more than 20 characters, feel free to throw it in the #animations-and-crafts channel on our Discord for bonus beans. If it's just a sketch or 20 weems, you probably won't get any extra beans, though.

4. Wrote a story?
Fill out the EXACT "Word Count".

5. Did a mod reward you extra beans?
Add that to "Bonus Beans".

6. Congrats! You have the number of beans your piece earned!

Step 4: Linking your Bean Tracker

You must link your Bean Tracker and write your Bean Count in the description of
EVERY DEVIATION.

Beans should be written as
[BEANS EARNED / NEW BEAN TOTAL].
----->

Beans may only be earned once for a given piece, meaning that reusing linework or bases, tracing, and sometimes heavily referencing a piece may make it ineligible for beans.

If a piece is mostly reused, or not created by you, simply put 0/TOTAL BEANS, and make sure to credit anyone who helped you.

Once you reach 1000 beans, check out the 1k Bean Guide!
