Clambers

clambers 1.png

Once upon a time, clambers were not a concern for the denizens of Stave Rest. These creatures inhabited other islands in the chain, so only travelers and locals of these islands would need to worry. However, very recently, a few have been spotted in the Wanderwide Forest.

Clambers are mysterious creatures, staxies only know what travelers claim to have seen.
The basics are as follows:

Clambers are huge, towering over staxies at a height of roughly 40 feet. Their legs are long and as thick, ending in faux-nails that can extend into long toes with excellent grip. They also posses a third pair of limbs at the collarbone, these are much smaller and seem to function like pedipalps, assisting in eating, climbing or exploring the world around them. While their

height would normally make them easy to spot, they hang out in densely forested areas, and under the cover of the trees, their legs blend in with the trunks. Their skin is thick, not suffering a scratch even as they run into trees, rubbing against branches,

bark, and sharp rocks. They have a large pouch at the neck, it's similar in texture and appearance to glass and is semi-transparent as well, though the only thing visible inside of it is the clamber's long tongue curled up inside.

Their diet is bizarre and mostly unknown. They eat very rarely but will ingest just about anything. They will go weeks without eating and then suddenly decide to rip a tree out of the earth, take a huge bite off a mountainside, or pluck a staxie from their home, all swallowed whole using their incredibly long, prehensile tongues. The current working theory is that these creatures eat for fun rather than necessity.

Clambers have excellent eyesight, their glowing eyes function in any weather conditions and they will see you. Their long limbs allow them to outrun a staxie, and they do not react as their bodies collide with trees and knock them to the ground.
If you encounter a clamber, you are encourages to do as follows: do not run, it will catch you. do not hide, it has already seen you. do not play dead, it knows you are not. fall to your knees and pray to the Depth that it gives you mercy.

Topping off their bizarre behaviors, clambers seem to go "inactive" for days, weeks, or months at a time. Staxie's dare not approach, even in this unresponsive state, as they may spring back to life without any warning. Clambers will sometimes be seen sitting or standing, covered in moss and algae and plant-growth.
